Future Cities

Photography Yvonne Brandwijk

In the CODE Autumn/Winter issue of 2014, we did a spotlight on the Future Cities project by photographer Yvonne Brandwijk and journalist Stephanie Bakker. Then still in the making, the project formally launched this year with an awe-inspiring website.

Brandwijk and Bakker traveled around half of the world to report on the cities of the future, with the first two stories on Kinshasa and Lima.

Kinshasa, legendary because of the Rumble in the Jungle and notorious by means of the rule of ‘emperor’ Mobuto, has wrestled itself loose from Western domination, a dictator and a civil war and is now rapidly emerged as a stylish metropolis. Lima is the world capital of taste in 2012 and home of one of the best restaurants in the world.

In our opinion: contemporary journalism at its finest. This year more cities will be launched, including Medellin, Yangon (officially launching in Pakhuis De Zwijger next week) and Addis Ababa.
